US Imports Autos from China
As China's Great Wall Motor company sets its goal to eventually add the US to its expanding list of auto consumer nations, the US eyes this inevitable but distant landmark with concern and watchful waiting. Poor styling, performance, emissions, and abysmal safety ratings overshadow the lure of a low price sedan made in China, and may take eight to ten years to rectify. The US has less to fear at the present time, from a frontal assault on Detroit, but needs to sharpen its skills for more subtle maneuvers by China to increase its share of the automotive market.

Chinese Automobiles Cheap Transportation For The Balkans
The auto industry in China is gearing up for a surge in growth in the future. That surge in manufacturing and exporting Chinese automobiles will first supply a projected demand in countries such as Russia, where the market for cheap transportation is expected to double in the next three years.

Other Third-World Markets
Once China has achieved a degree of success in Russia, it will target other third-world markets such as Latin America and Africa. Overcoming its technological shortcomings to gain credibility in the US market will take time and effort. China is a quick understudy and is gleaning manufacturing expertise from its venture partners who already have run the emissions, safety, and styling gauntlet in the US.

Chinese Auto Parts Market
While the time is not right for China to export quantities of fully-assembled sedans to the US, the manufacture and export of car parts for US-built cars is developing on a large scale. In addition, Detroit may have another investment at risk from low-priced China-built Honda or Volkswagen models, taking advantage of $2.50 per hour labor force. As long as labor is cheap and tariffs on parts are declining, these niche market operators can maintain a profit.

Affordable US Sedans
The success of the Chinese auto market to match its projected export quotas is not a done deal, China still has to overcome the same uncertainty of any startup commercial venture. The US, while concerned, has at least a decade before the results can be tallied. In the meantime, the US needs to protect its interests at home by sharpening its ability to produce comparable models at a lower price. The Chinese are not at our doorsteps yet, but they will be eventually.

Environmental Impact Of Industrialization
Industrialized nations, the US being at the forefront, serve as role models to developing countries on how to grow technologically to feed and house its inhabitants. Sadly, any effort the US and other industrialized nations are now making to slow the rapidly escalating contamination of the environment will be counteracted a thousand times over by the upwelling of technology in China. China will wipe out any hope we have of preserving the planet. Just like the US, the Chinese are using a technological paradigm based on consumption of natural resources, not living in balance with the planet. China is learning to become a partner in crime, along with the US, in the destruction of the planet.J. Prinz
