Chrysler, GM to Receive More Funds as Rescue Efforts Continue
12:04 a.m. EDT, April 21, 2009

As Chrysler LLC attempts to continue to forge an alliance with Fiat, the Obama administration will make approximately $500 million available to the company, while embattled General Motors Corp. will receive s much as $5 billion in hopes it will be able to restructure without bankruptcy proceedings.

The information came from an independent oversight report on the Treasury Department's corporate rescue fund released on Tuesday, April 21. Analysts are in agreement that if the Chrysler-Fiat deal fails, the company will go under. The suggestion of a bankrupcuty for GM that would create "good" and "bad" halves of the company has met with outrage from bondholders who would lose substantial amounts in such an arrangement.

In separate action, the United Auto Workers union has called on its membership to lobby the White House by phone or email for fair treatment to workers and retirees. Both companies are negotiating with the UAW for concessions that would cut labor costs necessary for their long-term survival. In a statement on the UAW web page, union leaders said, "We need President (Barack) Obama and his auto task force to stand up for the interests of workers and retirees in these restructuring negotiations."

The administration's task force has offered up to $6 billion to finance the Chrysler-Fiat alliance, but there has been no forecast forthcoming on the progress of the talks, only hope that a solution will be brokered that will "continue the Chrysler brand."

Spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters on Monday, "The President continues to be involved in this issue and understanding the tremendous economic importance both for the overall industry and for the dozens of communities throughout the country that are dependent upon Chrysler and auto parts suppliers that supply Chrysler for good-paying jobs."
