As General Motors faces a June 1 deadline to restructure under federal oversight, the company may ditch its GMC and Pontiac, brands to achieve deeper cost cuts, according to a report by Bloomberg on Wednesday, April 15.

As an aspect of talks with the Obama administration task force, the two brands are under scrutiny as a venue to restructure GM without a bankruptcy scenario. Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Buick are not being considered for dissolution at this time.

Originally GM had hoped to sell or close only Hummer, Saab, and Saturn. Currently there are rumored to be three bidders for Hummer, according to a report by Reuters on April 8, while an investor group including the private equity firm Black Oak Partners is interested in Saturn and its dealership network.

A sale of Hummer could generate from $100 million to $200 million for General Motors, which is operating with an infusion of $13.4 billion in government loans. No figures have been disclosed on the potential profit from the sale of Saturn.

According to the Bloomberg report, no firm decision has yet been reached on the fate of either Pontiac or GMC, but GMC has the better chance of surviving potential cost cutting measures. The report of the story in Automotive News indicated that calls to GM for comment had not been returned.
