Ford Issues Recall on Some Diesel Trucks, SUVs, and Vans
02:50 p.m. EDT, December 07, 2007

According to a recall announced yesterday by the Ford Motor company, approximately 1.2 million heavy duty, diesel powered pickups and vans may suffer from a software issue that causes engine stalls.

The vehicles effected by the recall included Excursion SUVs (1997-2003 with 7.3 liter engines), F-series Super Duty trucks, and E-series vans.

According to the required letter sent by Ford to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the camshaft position sensor in these models can suffer degradation over time and no longer efficiently control the opening and closing of the valves feeding and releasing air and fuel to the engine cylinders.

As a result, the engine may stall during operation, but power for steering and braking is maintained at speeds of as little as 30 miles per hour. There have been no injuries or deaths reported at this time due to the stalling issue, but here have been some minor accidents.

Letters to customers who may be effected by the problem will be mailed starting December 17. Prior to that time those who think their vehicle may suffer from the sensor problem may call 866-436-7332 to simply visit their dealership. Ford will replace the sensor at no cost to the vehicle's owner.
