In an effort to better compete with the Mercedes-Benz S class and BMW 7 series, the 2011 Audi A8, which will go on sale in the United States a year from now, will feature fuel-efficient engine options and a host of new technologies.
A new 4.2-liter V8 with 372 hp drops fuel consumption on the A8 as much as 22 percent via an energy recuperation system and innovations in thermal management. European drivers will be able to choose a 3 liter diesel producing 204 hp as well as a 4.2 liter version of the same engine. All engines are paired to an 8-speed tiptronic transmission and permanent AWD.
Driver assistance systems will include night vision assist and the Audi pre-sense safety system. Full LED headlights will be in place on this fourth generation model that is both longer and wider than the current model.
Marketing plans call for the A8 to be described as a sporty "driver's car" that offers both prestige and comfort. A hybrid version is also planned, with lithium battery technology under development by Sanyo Electric Co.
The A8 was first introduced in Europe in 1994 and reached the United States in 1997 where it gained popularity quickly as a full-sized luxury choice. It has remained a favorite with drivers for its high-quality mechanical components, light-weight aluminum frame, and superior handling characteristics.
