Toyota Seeks Lower Emissions Averages in Europe
02:55 p.m. EDT, February 14, 2008

Toyota plans to introduce two low-emission European models, including the iQ minicar, the smallest vehicle currently being produced by the company.

The iQ and the Urban Cruiser will make their European debut at the Geneva auto show scheduled to get underway on March 4.

Although Toyota has gained considerable green cachet with its popular Toyota Prius, the company still lags behind more environmentally conscious European carmakers like PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Fiat.

Toyota hopes that the iQ (smaller than even the Aygo minicar) and the Urban Cruiser SUV will allow them to rack up smaller CO2 emission averages while boosting sales.

In 2006 the company's emissions average in Europe dropped by 5 percent down from 161g/km to 153g/km. While impressive, however, the numbers don't match up well against PSA's at 142 and Fiat's at 144.

Toyota's has set a sales goal of 1.3 million sales in Europe by 2009, including those units moved in Russia and Turkey. In 2007 the company sold 1.18 million.

The Urban Cruiser is a five-door sport utility vehicle similar to the ScionxD here in the States that was previewed as a concept at the 2006 Geneva auto show. Imported from Japan, the Urban Cruiser will go on sale in Europe during the first half of 2009.
