GM Posts Even Greater Losses with $5.2 Billion Cash Burn
06:17 p.m. EDT, February 26, 2009

In its latest financial postings General Motors disclosed a third less revenue earned while the opeartion ate through $5.2 billion in cash, giving GM its sixth consecutive quarterly loss and the fourth year CEO Rick Wagoner has seen no profit for his company.

The net loss for the fourth quarter totaled $9.6 billion as opposed to $1.5 billion a year ago with the operating loss standing at $5.9 billion. Not surprisingly, GM said that it anticipates auditors will question whether or not the once-great auto giant is still a "going concern."

Just last week GM requested additional aid from the U.S. Treasury Department to the tune of $16.6 billion on top of the $13.4 billion it has already received. At the time the company pointed to a faster-than-anticipated deterioration of an already poor market.

In a note to investors, Efraim Levy, an analyst for Standard and Poor's said that the quarterly report bolsters "the notion that GM will need multi-billion dollar government assistance to continue as a going concern."

GM CFO Ray Young described the company's rate of cash burn in the fourth quarter as faster than anticipated because the global downturn worsened even farther. He described the $5.2 billion dip as "fairly sizable," while emphasizing that GM would reduce the rapid loss of cash in 2009.
