Corvette ZR1 Goes on Sale as this Summer
08:47 p.m. EDT, June 19, 2008

Although labeled as a "gas guzzler," the new Chevrolet Corvette, ZR1 will go on sale this summer with a sticker price of $105,000. The six-figure purchase includes the cost of shipping and $1,700 in taxes for the lack of fuel efficiency.

The sleek, performance vehicle will offer only two options, the addition of chrome wheels for $2,000 and a $10,000 interior package. The latter includes sports seats trimmed in leather with the ZR1 logo, air bags in the side position, and a Bose audio system with navigation.

General Motors indicated the minimal options reflected the fact that most fans will want the base car running at the lightest weight possible. Those customers who do go for full options will pay approximately $117,000.

Only 2,000 of the ZR1s will be built annually and it is expected that the price at most dealerships will exceed the sticker price due to high demand.

The ZR1 outperforms the Corvette Z06 by three tenths of a second, making the zero to sixty jump in 3.4 seconds. At the 100 mph jump the ZR1 requires only 7 seconds, a full second better than the Z06.

The car is powered by a 6.2-liter LS9 V8 producing 638 hp with a top speed of 205 mph. Estimated fuel economy is 14 mpg city and 20 on the open road.
