Gasoline Price Average Above $4 on Monday
02:00 p.m. EDT, June 09, 2008

Monday saw yet another record for the average per gallon price of gasoline at $4.023 although the price of crude oil eased back from the $11 spike of Friday, June 6.

The new price is 10% above the $3.692 level in May and 29% above the average in June 2007, which was $3.091, according to statistics compiled by AAA. The price of diesel climbed 1.1 cents to $4.773, still under the record high of May 30 by 2 cents.

In 22 states and the District of Colombia the price at the pump sits at $4 or above with California seeing the highest level at $4.45. Connecticut comes in second at $4.32 and Alaska third at $4.30. The lowest price to be had is in Missouri at $3.83. For 32 of the past 34 days the price of gasoline has gone up, setting a new record on 30 of those days.

Light, sweet crude scheduled for June delivery fell to $135.90 a barrel in pre-market trading Monday, down $2.66. The $11 jump on Friday was the largest ever recorded in a single day and sent the per barrel price to a record $138.54.

Some analysts are predicting that crude oil could reach $150 by July 4 and potentially as high as $200. However, the increases are being described as a "mania." When that diffuses and the price bubble breaks, the hope is that prices at the pump and per barrel will sink to more realistic levels.
