GMAC Gets $7.5 Billion for Auto Loans to GM and Chrysler
11:38 a.m. EDT, May 25, 2009

The U.S. Treasury has given GMAC a $7.5 billion boost to alleviate a nation-wide credit drought which has hobbled new car buyers from obtaining loans from auto dealerships. This comes after a $5 billion loan the U.S. Treasury gave to the lender in December. The Federal Reserve will allow GM to obtain auto loans from GMAC despite the fact that it is now a bank holding company in which GM is associated.

GMAC became a bank holding company in order to qualify for bailout money under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and was recently required to raise more capital to improve its sustainability on the basis of its "stress test." The loan which GMAC received will be divided to provide $4 billion to provide loans to new car buyers at Chrysler LLC, and $3.5 billion to fill in part of its capital shortage.

The sustainability of GMAC is integral to the restructuring of GM, which the government had set a deadline of June 1 to complete. The opinion of financial analysts is evenly divided on whether or not GM will make the cut.
