Chrysler Plans Three Bold Concepts for Detroit Show
01:00 p.m. EDT, November 21, 2007

In January at the Detroit auto show Chrysler LLC plans to unveil a trio of concept vehicles featuring cleanly performing powertrains and long driving ranges.

The powertrains, to be outfitted in a concept for each of the manufacturer's brands (Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep), will employ both lithium-ion batteries and electric motors.

The planned concepts, which will not be operational at the time they are shown in Detroit, include the Chrysler Ecovoyager, a four-passenger vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell passing electricity to an electric motor (200 kilowatt) and a battery.

The Ecovoyager will have a range of 300 miles and, according to Chrysler, will be able to achieve zero to sixty in under eight seconds.

The Dodge concept, the Zeo, is a four-door sport wagon with a passenger capacity of four. It will have a range of 250 miles and will be powered by a lithium-ion battery array (and a 250 kilowatt electric motor) charged by being plugged in. It will manage 0-60 in under six seconds.

Finally, the Jeep Renegade, is outfitted with an aluminum body and twin electric motors to achieve 4WD. Together the motors total 85 kilowatts. A lithium-ion battery pack is used, as is a diesel engine by Bluetec.

While most reviewers agree that it is unlikely that any of these concepts will ever appear on the American roadway, they are indicative of a bold new vision for Chrysler suggesting significant changes to the automaker's stable in coming model years.
