Shares in GM Decline for 5th Day
02:29 p.m. EDT, November 11, 2008

In a report by Mike Ramsey for Bloomberg, analysts from Buckingham Research Group said only federal aid will serve to prevent the collapse of General Motors, with shares in the country's largest automakers now at 1946 levels after declining sharply for five days straight.

A credit analyst with Fitch Inc. quoted in the article said, "Strategic bankruptcy is not an option for GM. This is an issue of operating or not operating." The company said on November 7 that it could run out of operating cash by year's end.

As of September 30, GM had $16.2 billion in cash on hand, down from the June figure of $21 billion. The company needs $11 billion to meet its monthly bills. GM sales fell 21 percent last quarter and were down 45 percent for the month of October.

Speaking during a November 7 interview for Bloomberg Television, GM CEO Rick Wagoner said a bankruptcy filing would devastate remaining sales and have "unimaginable consequences." The possibility of such an occurrence, "...motivates us to really come up with cash every way possible."

GM has eliminated jobs and closed plants in the face of losses since 2004 that total $73 billion. Wagoner, speaking to Automotive News said an aid package before the inauguration of President-elect Barak Obama in January was essential.

Investors, however, may have already decided GM is doomed to fail as shares in the troubled automotive giant continued to slide on Tuesday, November 11 on the New York Stock Exchange, sliding another 27 cents or 8 percent by 9:45 a.m.
