Trouble in the Offing for UAW, Chrysler Deal
02:38 p.m. EDT, October 15, 2007

According to Automotive News, a group of United Auto Workers leaders in Detroit will issue a "minority report" at the union's national council meeting today expressing their concerns about the UAW's tentative agreement with Chrysler LLC.

Additionally, Bloomberg reports that Bill Parker, the lead UAW negotiator on the committee that hammered out the proposed contract, will actually encourage union members to reject the deal.

"Virtually no Chrysler plant received commitments beyond the scope of their current product," said Parker. "As a result, the plant-by-plant threats we've experienced in the past will continue."

While the union's contract with General Motors guaranteed new vehicles to specific plants, the agreement with Chrysler contains no such provisions.

The contract was achieved last Wednesday after a national strike of only six-hours' duration. For the most part it is patterned on the GM deal in matters relative to the establishment of a trust for retiree health care benefits, a system of two-tier wages for non-production new hires, and moderate bonuses rather than pay wages.

The national council meeting is intended to inform UAW leaders about the details of the agreement and to solicit their vote before the contract is sent to the membership for a formal vote.

Formal scheduling of the ratification vote by the rank-and-file has not yet been announced.
