Thompson Resigns from Nissan Marketing
02:39 p.m. EDT, September 28, 2007

Jan Thompson, advertising and marketing chief for Nissan and Infiniti, has abruptly resigned her position with no reasons provided by the automaker or by Thompson herself.

Automotive News reports Ben Poore, current marketing manager for the Lincoln Mercury Division of Ford Motor Co., will replace Thompson effective October 8 as vice president of marketing communications.

Thompson, who has been with Nissan for three years, has taken both the Nissan and Infiniti brands into bold marketing areas including live video streaming on the Internet, viral ads, and experiential customer relations.

In past weeks Thompson introduced the Infiniti EX crossover at luncheons for women targeted in major market areas that were invitation-only events. In addition to discussing the EX, the luncheons included speakers addressing fashion and home design topics.

In a similar innovative move, Thompson landed exclusive sponsorship of the popular NBC series "Heroes" for the Nissan Rogue SUV, a deal extending to theatrical previews, iTunes cards, and Internet repeats of the series.

While some dealers complained over the lack of traditional TV advertising, Thompson insisted effectively spent marketing dollars trumped larger budgets.

Thompson, who served in marketing positions for Lexus, Toyota, Chrysler, and Mazda stayed with Nissan when it relocated to Nashville although she was reputedly unhappy about the move.

Nissan's statement regarding her departure recognized Thompson "for her contributions to the company" and wished her "every success in the future."
