Production Version of Volt to Be Shown
02:24 p.m. EDT, September 05, 2008

As part of General Motor's 100-year anniversary celebration to be officially commemorated on September 16, the automaker will display a production version of its highly anticipated extended-range Volt electric car.

A GM source quoted by Automotive News Europe said, "The rumors that a production version of the Volt will show up at the celebrations are true. The car will be a true representation of what the production version looks like and be somewhat different from the concept versions."

According to the quoted source, the production Volt will be shown specifically to GM employees at members of the media at an event at the company headquarters in Detroit.

In July, GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz, in remarks delivered in London, said of the Volt, "A production model will be showing this fall, but not at Paris (auto show.)"

Lutz told Automotive News Europe that pre-production models of the Volt would be assembled in 2009 with the final production version headed to showroom floors in America in 2010 and in Europe in 2011.

"Everything is looking good," Lutz said. "We have quite a few running around now in old Chevy Malibu bodies, so we can modify the engine and battery configuration."

The global compact architecture will be used for the Volt body and on the next-generation Vauxhall/Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze.
