Toyota Unveils On-Board Breathalyzer Test Device on Commercial Vehicles
12:41 a.m. EDT, September 09, 2009

An on-board breathalyzer test will be required in order for drivers to start their commercial and transportation vehicles in a set of investigations run by Toyota Motor Corp. and its truck subsidiary, Hino Motors Ltd. Mimicking studies performed by Nissan Motor Co., breathalyzer test devices will be installed in 30 vehicles.

The hand-held device is equipped with a small digital camera which photographs the driver as she performs the test. The image is sent to the fleet manager to ascertain the identity of the test subject. If the breathalyzer test results are negative, the device will unlock the ignition and the driver will be allowed to drive off. If the test is positive, the device automatically locks the ignition and informs the fleet manager.

Other versions of sobriety testing have employed tests for alcohol in driver's sweat coupled with a video camera to check the behavior of the driver. The implementation of breathalyzer test devices in passenger vehicles has not yet been considered. The likelihood that new car buyers will tolerate the inconvenience of performing a breathalyzer test every time they take a drive to the liquor store is slim. Law enforcement may consider on-board breathalyzer devices to enforce their DUI license suspension programs.
