The 2009 BMW 1 Series is the second installment of this compact coupe. It debuted in 2008, amid a sea of smaller cars, but it has been able to find its place. The 1 Series comes in two different trim models. The 128 is the base model, and the 135 is the high performance version. Both are available in either a coupe or a convertible. Being that the 1 Series is only in its second year, there isn't much new, with the exception of a heated steering wheel and some upgrades to the navigation system.
Even though the 1 Series is the smallest BMW offering, it still packs the same kind of power that one would expect from the German automaker. The base 128 model is powered by a 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder that produces 230 HP. This engine is capable of carrying the coupe from 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. The high performance 135 model has a turbocharged 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder. This 300 HP engine will take you from 0-60 in 5-5.5 seconds, depending on whether you are in the coupe or the convertible. On both trim levels, a six speed manual transmission is standard, but an automatic is available as an option. Depending on the trim level, you can expect to get between 20 and 28 mpg in the BMW 1 Series.
On the outside, the 2009 1 Series appears short and compact. This is due, in part, to the upright grille and basic C-pillar design. Again, both trim levels are available in a coupe or convertible. The coupe also offers an optional moon roof. On the inside, the materials and styling are comparable with that of the higher end BMW models. Some, however, may notice that they did scale it back some for this version. As is the case with many cars in this class, there isn't much room for rear passengers, unless they are children. The technology and safety features in the 1 Series is on par with most new vehicles; including a navigation system and connectivity for high tech gadgets.
The performance of the 2009 BMW 1 Series is second to none, whether on the city streets or winding mountain roads. This is when you are definitely reminded that you are driving a BMW. Overall, this car offers great performance and power for a starting price of around $30,000. This price will go up quickly, however, as you add options.
