The 2009 BMW X6 expands the boundaries of the definition for crossover SUVs. In fact, it's difficult to believe that you're not actually in a car. BMW titles the new X6 a "Sports Activity Coupe". It rides high. It accommodates for passengers. It features four doors and lies somewhere between a traditional SUV and a powerful sports car. There are two engine options available for you to choose from: an I6 or a V8 - and both have dual turbochargers.
The xDrive35i 4dr AWD Sorts Utility Coupe features a 3.0L 300hp I6 that cranks out 300 lb-ft of torque at 1400 RPM. Alternatively, the xDrive50i 4dr Sports Utility Coupe turns the X6 into a hot rod with its 4.4L 400hp V8 that twists out a whopping 450 lb-ft of torque at 1800 RPM. The I6 configuration delivers 15/20 mpg city/highway while the monster-powered V8 configuration will take you 12/18 mpg. With either trim that you select, you will be able to tow up to 6000 pounds of whatever behind you. The 2009 X6 from BMW provides an awesome amount of power and pep regardless of the engine that you select.
Steering wheel mounted paddle shifters control the six-speed automatic transmission and add to the overall sporty appeal of the BMW X6. Handling is rated very well both on the track and on the twisting roads. While it performs better than most, if not all, other SUVs, of course it does not perform quite as well as the roadsters and coupes offered by the German automaker. Going through corners produces very little leaning of the body. If there's any drawback at all to the ride quality, it would be that the suspension system is a bit overly firm. This is especially true when equipped with the optional Sport Package and 20 inch wheels.
Every element of the interior cabin space is upscale. Loads of leather, optimal quality trim, surfaces everywhere that are soft to the touch and an overall elegant ambience make the 2009 X6 a true pleasure to command. Speaking of commanding, the BMW iDrive system for control comes standard and continues to evolve into a very user-friendly, easily understandable arrangement of completely programmable components. While it may initially seem confusing, repetitive usage proves its unmatched efficiency.
Interior spaciousness is more than adequate, unless the two rear passengers are 7 foot tall each. Ample cargo space is included, especially with the rear seats folded down and the hatch lifted. If you opt for the Premium Package, a power liftgate is included. And the Cold Weather Package provides heated leather seats for all occupants. Competition for the 2009 BMW X6 comes from the Mercedes Benz M-Class, the Audi Q7, the Cadillac SRX and the Lexus GT 470. MSRPs range from $55,900 up to $66,650. That seems a bit pricey, especially for the V8 models, but if you can get past that then the X6 will be one of the most solid investments that you will ever make.
