The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid combines all of the highly coveted "green" features of a hybrid with the style and spaciousness of a refined five-passenger sedan. Most impressively, the Malibu Hybrid is priced at an affordable $24,695 - an excellent price even for a non-hybrid sedan. The 2009 model year brings with it Bluetooth capabilities and standard 17-inch aluminum wheels, up from the prior model year's 16-inch. Bluetooth connectivity allows drivers to complete handsfree calling, both convenient and safe. Though there was limited availability of this Chevrolet Hybrid in the 2008 model year, a nationwide release is set for the 2009 version.
Under the hood, the 2009 Malibu Hybrid is an ECOTEC 2.4L DOHC four-cylinder hybrid engine. The gas engine is combined with a hybrid propulsion electric system that enables the sedan to run on either solitary gasoline or a blend of electricity and gas. This system lets the Malibu save on fuel without sacrificing power. However, some buyers might still be disappointed with only 164 horsepower. A four-speed automatic hybrid transmission is standard as well. Potential buyers might be able to overlook the mild horsepower for the notable 26 city MPG and 34 highway MPG. To get similar fuel efficiency from the Saturn Aura Hybrid, you may qualify for a $1,300 tax credit.
Inside, consumers can expect the same level of comfort and roominess as is found in the regular Malibu. Some of the highlights in the interior include steering wheel-mounted audio controls, automatic climate control, and an MP3 audio input jack. The input jack allows drivers to sync their MP3 player with the Malibu's audio system. Also included is the standard OnStar program, which features roadside assistance, turn-by-turn navigation, instant accident alerts, and airbag deployment sensors. However, some buyers will certainly be turned off by the fact that the driving directions are provided by a live OnStar rep, rather than a digital display.
Other safety features range from front and rear crumple zones to dual stage front airbags. The 2009 Malibu Hybrid also comes standard with a sophisticated anti-theft system and remote keyless entry. The anti-theft system includes an element that will automatically disable the engine in the event of a break-in - a great addition for those that are not able to garage their vehicles. Also, the remote trunk release located inside the trunk ensures that no one will ever be locked inside the trunk.
Taken as a whole, the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is a great alternative for those that want to go green, but don't want to give up space. Families looking to save on the cost of fuel will find that the gas mileage is hard to beat. However, individuals looking for a bit of oomph in their hybrid's power will want to look at either a "mild" hybrid or alternative fuel model.
