The 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe is a carryover model from the previous year. With eight trim levels available - not including the hybrid version - buyers will be impressed with the amount of customization that can be done. However, so many choices can be overwhelming for a potential buyer as well. This full-size four-door SUV can seat up to nine passengers, and cargo space is abundant. With an available tow package, the 2009 Tahoe gives drivers the opportunity to utilize the model in several different ways. With a base price of $35,730, the Chevrolet Tahoe is competitive with other full-size models on the market.
Under the hood, the base trim level gets a standard 295 horsepower 4.8L V8, while the highest LTZ 4WD is equipped with a 315 horsepower 5.3L V8. The base trim also includes a four-speed automatic transmission, while the LTZ is fitted with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic. Neither model trim has other transmission options, which might be a turnoff for some buyers. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, a heavy duty 600 cca battery, and a steel reinforced safety cage are all standard on the model as well.
Bonus features include a tire pressure monitoring system, premium smooth ride suspension, trailering equipment (seven-wire harness, trailer receiver, etc.), and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The premium smooth ride suspension is made up of wide front and rear tracks and coil-over-shock front suspension. Autoride suspension is available on the LTZ trim.
With 14 city MPG and 20 highway MPG, the Chevrolet Tahoe falls a bit short by contemporary standards. And, the Tahoe Hybrid is not much of an improvement with only 20 city MPG and 20 highway MPG. Certainly, other hybrid models on the market, like the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, far surpass Chevrolet's version.
Safety features range from head side-curtain airbags to a one-year free subscription to the OnStar program. OnStar features immediate accident alerts, automatic airbag deployment alerts, roadside assistance, and turn-by-turn navigation. However, some potential buyers might be off-put by the fact that OnStar's turn-by-turn directions are provided by a live customer representative, rather than an automated system. OnStar also provides vehicle diagnostic reports and will let drivers know when an oil change is necessary or any other issues have occurred through a monthly email alert.
Overall, the 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe could be a good pick for a large family looking for an adaptable model that can accommodate everyone. However, some buyers could be drawn to other models because of the Tahoe's poor gas mileage and lack of transmission options.
