2012 Chevrolet Corvette

Posted: 01/07/2012 - 11:04 PM ET

With a rear deck that looks like a Ferrari and a Thunderbird mated, this sports/muscle car is sure to have other drivers on the road oohing-and-ahhing over your new ride. Chevy has made the 2012 Corvette coupe available in 9 flashy colors, ranging from the standard Blade Silver Metallic, to an eye-catching Torch Red. The Corvette has been around for nearly 60 years and it’s easy to understand why. This year’s coupe model boasts and electrifying 430 horses under the hood, an aluminum 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine, with both a top speed of 190 MPH and an eco-friendly 26 MPG highway. For those of us who like to pretend we’re Dale Earnhardt, the 2012 coupe can reach 60 MPH from a standstill in an awe-inspiring 4.2 seconds. Starting at $49,525 MSRP and going up to nearly $80,000 (depending on model), this year’s Corvette may not be the cheapest car on the road, but boy is it sure fun to drive. Chevy also provides a 100,000-mile or 5-year warranty (whichever comes first) to provide consumers with peace-of-mind.

With the Corvette’s Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the suspension is sure to be as tuned to handle curvy mountain roads as it is being able to drive down the street to pick up a 6-pack. When it comes to performance, this 6-speed manual transmission will not let you down.

For those hot summer days when you’re driving down California’s scenic Highway 1, the 2012 Corvette coupe has a detachable roof panel option, just many Camaros of the last 20 years. Unlike many sports cars *cough* Lamborghini *cough* Corvette’s interior is designed with luxury and comfort in mind. The standard leather seats offer a luxurious look and comfortable feel. The seats have been fine-tuned to provide drivers with ultimate comfort and support both on the test track as well as in town. The steering wheel even has indented thumb grips for when you’re taking those tight corners at 50 MPH (not that you should do this unless you’re on a legal track).

This year’s Corvette also has a Head-Up Display so you won’t have to take your eyes off the road to check your speed, a state-of-the-art sound system by Bose, Bluetooth capability, and a generous, free 6-month trial of OnStar support. This car is sure to last half of a lifetime, with composite body panels that not only reduce the overall weight of the car, but are rust-proof as well. Also included is a free, 3-month trial of Sirius XM satellite radio. On the 2LT, 3LT and 4LT models, satellite radio is provided free for 12 months.

Chevy didn’t forget to include the all-important safety features either. The 2012 Corvette comes with Active Handling, OnStar and 4-wheel antilock brakes. The HID xenon headlights put out a road-illuminating 900 lumens so you’ll be able to see that deer 200 yards away, standing in the middle of the road. Perhaps one of the most amazing features of the Corvette are its run-flat tires will enable you to continue driving on a flat for a short amount of time, until you are able to repair or replace the tire. In the event of a crash where you are unable to respond to OnStar, the car’s navigation system sends your exact coordinates to the OnStar support center, allowing them to dispatch authorities to your exact location.

If this will be your first Corvette and you live near the Southwest, you may want to look into the two different Corvette driving schools offered. One is the Bob Bondurant School of High-Performance Driving near Phoenix, AZ and the other is Ron Fellows Performance Corvette Driving School located just outside of Sin City, NV – which is very fitting, because you may feel like you’re committing a sin just owning one of these devilishly fast and powerful sports cars.

Overall, most who have tried the 2012 Chevy Corvette have very little negative things to say about it. In fact, all the reviewers and test-drivers seem to be thoroughly impressed and seem to reiterate that the Corvette keeps getting better and better as the years go by.
