The 2008 Dodge Dakota pickup is comparable in size to the Toyota Tundra and is available in 24 different trims. There are 12 separate trim packages, each available as a 4x4 or a 4x2. This year's Dakota has been redesigned from the front windshield forward. A fresh, new look is presented featuring a standard tailgate-mounted spoiler as well. 10 of the 12 trims feature a 3.7L 210hp V6 engine with transmission options that range between 4 and 5 speed automatic overdrive and 6 speed manual overdrive capability. The Laramie Extended Cab and Crew Cab trims feature a more powerful 4.7L 302hp V8 engine. All trims come with an impressive unlimited warranty on the powertrain.
This new Dodge Dakota delivers an increase in horsepower and torque when compared to last year's model. It simultaneously squeezes out an increase in fuel efficiency. New accents, center console and a new instrument panel are featured on the interior as is a pull-out bin for electronic controls. Cup holders with modular inserts have also been added. The Crew Cab trim also offers and innovative folding and removable cargo management system that fits compactly under the seats. For the Small Trucks class, the 2008 Dakota comes in under the average MSRP by about $2400.
It's impressive maximum payload rating outshines the class average as well (1720 pounds vs. 1466.67 pounds). The length of this tough-built truck is 218.5 inches compared to the class average of 206.42 inches. Rear headroom is one area where it falls below the average of 37.27 inches by a mere 3/4 of an inch. All 4x4 trims deliver between 14 and 15 mpg in the city and between 18 and 19 mpg on the highways. The 4x2 trims are logically more fuel efficient delivering between 15 and 16 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.
All 24 trims comes with standard air conditioning, CD player, ABS braking systems, power locks, power windows and both driver and passenger airbags. NAV systems are optional on all but 4 trims as are sunroofs. These 2008 Dodges do not have traction control or stability control systems available. Also, if you want leather seats, you are going to have to choose either of the four Laramie trims. Consumer ratings of these trucks are very high - most delivering a 9 out of 10 rating or higher. The only area that was rated poor in terms of safety was possible injury to the left foot of the driver in dummy-based crash tests.
Overall, the 2008 Dodge Dakota is one of the best small trucks in its class. The basic warranty for all trims is 36 months/36,000 miles. There is also a rust warranty that covers the vehicle for 60 months or 100,000 miles. And of course, that unlimited powertrain warranty is a nice feature. Most trims were rated at about 7.5 seconds for their 0 to 60 mph times bringing them to a swift 16 second quarter mile finish - not bad for a pickup. Their sporty looks and dependable builds will deliver you, your crew and your cargo safely to your destinations with years of trouble-free service.
