Dodge has a complete redesign in store for its line of heavy duty trucks in 2010. This year's version, however, will carry the design of the 2008 model. Buyers are faced with the choice of sticking with what they are familiar with in the 2009 Dodge Ram 3500, or waiting a year to see what they have planned for the new model.
The 3500 offers several different configurations on one of two different wheel bases. The 140.5 inch frame supports the regular cab long bed and the Quad cab short bed. The Quad cab long bed and the Mega cab will both sit on the 160.5 inch frame. The Ram 3500 Quad and Mega cabs are available in either single or dual rear wheels, while the regular cab can only be ordered with dual wheels. Among the various configurations are four different trim levels, including ST, SXT, SLT, and Laramie. The Laramie trim is only available in the Quad and Mega cabs. The only other exception is that the Mega cab is not available on the ST. Also available, is the TRX4 off road package, which can only be ordered on the SXT. The 2009 3500 doesn't offer much in the way of new features, especially with the new design coming out next year. The only notable change from 2008 is the limited slip rear axle, which is now standard on all 3500s.
The current body design has been around for six years now, so most will be familiar with the look as they walk around this truck. The characteristic crosshair grille, creased hood and air dam have been a part of this truck's distinctive look since 2003. The interior of the 2009 Dodge 3500 isn't quite as roomy as the Toyota Tacoma or some of its other competitors, unless you are sitting in the massive Mega cab. One of the most attractive features of the Mega cab is the 71 cubic feet of storage space under the second row of seats. The top end Laramie edition offers a more luxurious appearance and feel than the other trims. The wood trim and leather seats make it a more inviting and comfortable ride than the others. Among the interior options are dual zone climate controls, DVD navigation system, power adjustable pedals, and premium audio system.
The 3500 is powered by a 350 horsepower 6.7 liter six cylinder turbo-diesel. This engine comes standard on all 3500 models. It can be mated with either a six speed automatic or standard transmission.
Trucks of this size rarely see much in the way of additional safety features. However, there is an available electronic stability system in the 2009 Ram 3500. These trucks also offer an energy absorbing steering column.
The 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 has a starting price tag of around $35,000. The current version of this truck has proven to be quite popular thanks to its durability and reliability. One has to be tempted, however, to hold off for a year and see what's new for 2010.
