2009 Dodge Sprinter Cargo Van Review

The 2009 Dodge Sprinter Cargo Van provides you with a nontraditional option in full-sized American made vans. It is pricey and it lacks the power of its competitors, but it has the most interior space in its class and it handles better than any of its competition. An impressive array of body styles is available with many optional configurations as well. It features a cab and that's able to be walked through, excellent quality materials-build and, considering its bulk, very impressive fuel efficiency.

There's only one engine available for the Dodge Sprinter in 2009: a 3.0L turbodiesel six cylinder - and it lacks the power of the Ford and GM cargo van engines. Towing capacity tops out right around 5000 pounds whereas some of its competition can tow nearly 10,000 pounds. These vans are made for carrying passengers and cargo - not so much for towing. And if you do not have the need for excessive towing, the sprinter offers you the most distinction and interesting options available in its segment.

Mercedes-Benz engineering makes the 2009 Sprinter Cargo Van highly maneuverable and able to deliver superior gas mileage over its American competition. Its European qualities are wonderful, but the feel of a U.S. made V10 or V8 is simply missing. It looks narrow due to its design standards, but it is every bit as wide as its GM and Ford rivals. That narrow look stems from the fact that it is both taller and lengthier than the competition featuring a standard wheelbase of 144 inches. If you care to step up to the extended version, the 170 inch wheelbase swallows up the GM and Ford versions.

Body lengths come in three available options ranging from 19 to 24 feet. You can also select between 3 choices of roof heights. The High-Roof optional allows an individual that is 6 foot and 3 inches tall to stand up inside. There's also a Mega-Roof option for the 2009 Dodge Sprinter which will allow your average NBA star to stand upright. Again, the competition comes nowhere close.

The 3.0L V6 turbodiesel engine creates 154hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It delivers you fuel efficiency ratings right around 24 MPG. Once again, that blows the Ford and GM competition away. Its engine is complemented by a 5-speed automatic transmission - the only choice available. And model dependent, payload ratings are measured between 3155 and 5649 pounds.

Antilock disc braking and electronic stability control are standard safety features. And of course, there are several optional safety features available as well including side and head curtain air bags, a camera in the rear and sensors for parking in the rear and in the front. Overall, the 2009 Dodge Sprinter Cargo Van is the best choice for those who are interested in hauling passengers and cargo. If you need heavy towing capacity, check out the Ford or GM options. Otherwise, the Sprinter is your best bet by far.
