Dodge Avenger

The original Dodge Avenger debuted in 1995 as a 2-door coupe with a bold and exciting exterior style and a spacious cabin. This Avenger was discontinued after the 2000 model year, but the Avenger name resurfaced once again as the 2008 Dodge Avenger-an athletically designed 4 door sedan-became the successor to the Dodge Stratus. This Avenger seems to define the middle of the road-a midsize car, average price, mid grade quality materials and average acceleration.

The 2008 Dodge Avenger shares its platform with the Chrysler Sebring; with the most profound difference between the two vehicles being the Avenger's more aggressive, youth oriented style.

There are 3 engines available for the Dodge Avenger. The first is a fuel efficient, but relatively weak 2.4 liter 4-cylinder that is capable of 173 horsepower that is sent to the front wheels via a 4 speed automatic transmission. The mid range offering is a 189 horsepower 2.7 liter V6 that delivers ample power and is more refined than the noisy 4-cylinder. The remaining 3.5 liter V6 powerhouse is available with front or all wheel drive and delivers 235 horsepower. This engine is paired with an efficient 6 speed automatic transmission with manual override capabilities.

Each of the three engines has a corresponding trim. The 4-cylinder Avenger SE comes with power windows, mirrors and door locks; AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary audio jack, cruise control and air conditioning. The Avenger SXT is equipped with the 2.7 liter V6 engine and adds 17-inch alloy wheels and anti-lock brakes to the features found on the SE. The Avenger R/T is powered by the 3.5 liter V6 and includes 18-inch wheels, a sport tuned suspension system, 4-wheel disc brakes, a 6 disc CD/DVD changer and automatic climate control. The all wheel drive R/T also comes standard with traction and stability control, which is optional for other Avenger models. The commonly popular extra features and options are available for the Avenger, as are some less common and innovative conveniences like the auto industry's first heated/cooled cup holder set, a rear seat DVD entertainment system (which is not widespread option amongst mid size sedans) and a combination navigation system/storage device with a 20 GB hard drive.

Despite the Avenger's above average standard features list and variety of powertrain choices, the Avenger itself is nothing more than an average 5 passenger sedan. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is powerful, yet the driving experience lacks any sense of excitement and fuel economy is below average. The 2008 Dodge Avenger is one of the many sport themed midsize sedans on the market today, and with so much competition in this category only those that are distinctive will stand out in the crowd-which, unfortunately the Avenger does not.
