Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup

Despite high gas prices, truck drivers in need of hauling capacity, or just a great ride, have always loved the pickup tuck. The Dodge Ram 1500 pickup is a full-size version that is assembled at plants in Mexico, Michigan, and Missouri. This model takes its name from the shape of the hood ornament that was placed on Dodge vehicles in the 1930s.

The first generation of Ram pickup trucks was introduced in 1981. Two versions were available at that point; the two-wheel drive ("D") and the four-wheel drive ("W"). Half ton trucks were called 150, three-quarter ton versions were dubbed 250, and one ton versions had the 350 designation.

Different sizes of cab were offered, from the standard cab, to extended cab (referred to as the "Club"), and the crew cab. The first Dodge Rams to hit the market were an updated version of the Dodge D series of pickups that dated back to 1972. This interpretation of the Ram offered large wraparound tail lights, rectangle-shaped headlamps, and a squared-off body. The interior of the pickup was also updated at this point to include bench seats and a new dashboard layout.

Available engines at this point included the 5.9L V8 and a 2.7L V8. A sliding rear cab window, power locks and windows, and Sno-Commander plowing package were also available.

A redesign was introduced for Dodge trucks for the 1994 model year. The exterior was updated to include a look more in keeping with that of a big rig truck. This latest model was unique in appearance, with its large front end and grill. Customers could choose from a 3.9L V6, a 5.2L V8, and a 5.9L I6 Cummins Turbo diesel engine. If you didn't want a diesel engine but needed a vehicle with a lot of pulling power, a 8.0L V10 engine was also offered in the 2500 and up versions.

The third generation of Dodge Ram trucks made its grand entrance to the market in 2002. The latest models were reinvented to include a new interior design, power trains, suspension, and frame. The grille was made bigger and the Chrysler offered a number of special models to keep the public's interest in these vehicles current. This strategy paid off with sales of 400,000 in 2002 and 450,000 in 2003.

The Dodge Ram 1500 pickup is one of the special models available. This half ton truck is equipped with a 215 hp engine and gets 11 mpg in the city and 14 mpg for highway driving. While drivers may cringe at the pump, the capabilities of these ram tough vehicles will keep them in demand for years.
