Though the Dodge Sprinter Cargo Van did not show up on the American auto market until 2003, it was originally released worldwide as the Mercedes Benz Sprinter in 1995. The model is primarily used as a delivery and cargo van in the commercial industry, but is also sold to private consumers as an alternative to the full-size van. This European designed van can seat between eight and ten passengers, depending on the buyers choices. One of the most prominent features of the Dodge Sprinter is its extra tall roof, which allows most passengers to stand fully erect inside the model.
While individuals are permitted to purchase the Cargo Van, it is mainly used for industries like hotel chains, airports, and retirement living facilities in the United States. In the past few years, the Sprinter Cargo Van has been making its mark as transportation for delivery services like DHL and UPS. Not only that, many American emergency services vehicles have been swapped for the Sprinter, and even some waste collection companies have converted the model into a pickup vehicle.
The Dodge Sprinter is available with three engine choices: 2148 cc I4, 2987 cc V6, or a gasoline-powered 3.5L V6. In 2007, the Sprinter got the addition of a turbodiesel-powered V6 as well. Initially, the Sprinter Cargo Van was only available with a five-speed automatic transmission, but the 2007 model year gave the model an optional six-speed manual transmission.
One of the most popular aspects of the Sprinter is its conversion capabilities. Some consumers are opting to purchase this Dodge and create a small motorhome or wheelchair accessible van. Also, cities across the United States have started to change their handicapped public transportation over to the Sprinter because of its roomy interior and adaptability.
Even though the United States did not get a taste of the Dodge Sprinter Cargo Van until 2003, the worldwide film and television industry has been using the model on the screen since its 1995 inception. Most recently, television shows like 24, Prison Break, Reno 911!, Desperate Housewives, and Chuck have given a role to the Cargo Van. Movies featuring the model include Big Momma's House 2, Little Miss Sunshine, Shooter, and the hit Rush Hour 3 starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan.
A re-launch of the Dodge Sprinter Cargo Van took place in 2007, with the maker hoping to increase public interest. However, sales have continued to be predominantly from the private sector, while individuals are choosing the classically designed Chevrolet and Ford conversion vans.
