2008 Ford Explorer 2WD Review

The 2008 Ford Explorer 2WD is considered a traditional midsize SUV, available with V6 or V8 power. New features for 2008 were introduced that included enhanced brakes, suspension and steering. The addition of side curtain air bags on all models means that passengers are better protected in an accident than ever before. Also, some models have a universal garage door opener and power adjustable pedals. Another interesting option that has been added this year is a voice-activated navigation system.

For such a heavy vehicle, the Explorer 2WD handles surprisingly well. The interior is comfortable and can seat between 5 and 7 passengers. For a person who wants or needs to haul a heavy load, the Ford Explorer's towing capacity of just over 7,300 lbs is truly impressive. The vehicle has a maximum payload of 1,531 lbs.

While you may be able to find a similar vehicle that offers the same types of features as the Explorer, if you need to be able to tow objects, then this model is worth considering. Passengers seated at the back of the vehicle can still enjoy a smooth ride due to this Ford's independent rear suspension system.

Safety should be on your checklist when you are looking for a new vehicle, and the 2008 Explorer doesn't disappoint in this area. It was awarded a five-star crash rating in 2006 for front and side impact crashes. Because of its design, this SUV is considered to have the same rating until the year 2010.

In outside appearance, this is not a subtle vehicle at all. The lamps are large and customers can choose from trim package that best suits their needs and taste. Go black with the XLT trim package and get a dramatic look with black roof rails and wheel lip moldings. A four bar chrome grille completes the look.

If you prefer a two-tone look, the Eddie Bauer trim package includes silver roof rails and a three bar chrome grille. The Limited package is a bit more subtle, with its monochromatic bumpers and running boards.

At an MSRP of $25,775, the 2008 Ford Explorer 2WD gives you a smooth ride with exceptional towing capacity. Toyota 4Runner, the Nissan Pathfinder, the Chevy Trailblazer, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee offer comparable features. What makes the Explorer stand out from the pack, and is it your best option?
