2009 Ford Edge Review

Ford rolls out the third version of its midsize crossover this year with the 2009 Ford Edge. Four available trim options offer plenty to choose from in the areas of performance and safety. They return with the SE, SEL, and Limited versions, as well as the new Sport model.

When you climb inside the 2009 Edge, there is little change from the previous models; with the exception of metal accents that have been added to the white faced instrument panel. With room for five passengers, the 60/40 split rear seats also offer plenty of configurations for cargo when coupled with the 32.2 cubic feet of space in the back. This is very comparable to the Land Rover Range Rover and other of its competitors, the Nissan Murano, Mazda CX-7, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Under the hood, all models come equipped with the 265 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 engine, along with a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The Edge shows its versatility with a towing capacity of up to 3,500 lbs. The only choice in this area is between the front wheel drive and the intelligent all wheel drive. And, with today's gas prices, consumers may be disappointed by the 16/24 miles per gallon that this configuration offers.

When you walk around the outside of the Ford Edge, you'll notice the familiar Ford three-blade chrome grill and clear lens caps on the tail lights. As far as size goes, it's fairly similar to its competitors, although it is slightly wider than the other vehicles in this class. The Edge comes standard with dual chrome exhaust, power mirrors, keyless remote entry, and fog lights. Options include the power lift gate (on all but the SE), automatic head lamps, and Vista Roof. The 2009 Edge also offers four different wheel size options (17", 18", 20", and 22").

On the road, drivers will be impressed with the acceleration and comfortable ride that the Edge offers. However, there is some body leaning on high speed turns. Plenty of safety features have also been built in to the Ford Edge, with a few new ones for the '09 model. Standard on all models are side impact and curtain airbags, stability system, and antilock brakes. New for this year are the post-crash alarm system and the blind spot mirror. There is also an optional audible reverse sensor.

Overall, the 2009 Ford Edge is a sporty crossover that offers performance as well as practicality. Starting at around $26,000, the Edge might not appeal to consumers with families; especially when they can get a larger SUV for around the same price. Some, however, will appreciate the unique look and car-like feel.
