2009 Ford Explorer 2WD Review
The 2009 Ford Explorer 2WD features a classic SUV style that is both commanding and elegant. With three varying trims to choose from, buyers will have the opportunity to put their personal touch on the model. Seating for up to seven passengers and powerful engine selections make the 2009 Explorer one of the best in its class. As a carryover from the prior model year, buyers can expect the same versatility and high-end safety features. However, some might be put off by the Explorer 2WD's poor fuel economy and short list of standard features on the base trim.
Under the hood, the Explorer can be fitted with either a 210 horsepower 4.0L SOHC V6 or a 292 horsepower 4.6L SOHC V8. A five-speed automatic transmission comes standard with the V6, while the V8 gets a six-speed automatic. Potential buyers should be pleased with the drive train selections; however, the fact that Ford has done little about the Explorer's poor fuel efficiency could be enough to cause a consumer to look elsewhere. The smaller engine gets around 14 city MPG and 20 highway MPG, while the V8's city estimate drops to 13 MPG. Nevertheless, with features like a flat-folding rear seat and 7,310-lbs of towing capacity, the Explorer 2WD beats most of the competition.
The Ford Explorer includes an MP3 compatible CD player, a trial subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio, an available DVD entertainment system, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The CD player allows passengers to sync their MP3 players with the SUV's audio system, which truly makes one's playlist portable. The tire pressure monitoring system features a digital display located in the instrument cluster that continuously examines the pressure in all four tires. The system will alert drivers if a tire has too much or too little pressure as well. For buyers that want the ultimate in luxury that Ford has to offer, the Explorer Limited includes a six-disc in-dash CD changer, a voice-activated entertainment and communication system, and a Homelink universal garage door opener. This unique opener also has the ability to link to an owner's lighting and security system in their home.
Safety features are top priority on the 2009 Explorer. With AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, an Intelligent Safety System, and Safety Canopy airbags, this SUV is among the safest on the market. The Intelligent Safety System includes a variety of sensors throughout the model that perform services like adjusting the seatbelts to the proper setting and regulating the front airbags based on the passengers' mass, position, and height.
In general, the 2009 Ford Explorer 2WD is a solid model, but the maker will certainly need to make a few adjustments in the upcoming model years. With poor fuel economy, the Explorer will not be able to stay competitive with flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles on the market. Priced at around $26,995, the Explorer is one of the most affordable full-size SUVs, but some buyers with small children might instead look for a model that includes a significant number of extras on the base trim.
