2009 Jaguar XJ-Series

Posted: 08/18/2008 - 5:25 PM ET

The 2009 Jaguar XJ-Series is a ful-size luxury sedan or sports sedan. This model is a carryover from the 2008 model year. Generous power, high-end features, and the classic Jaguar style are all included in the XJ-Series. The traditional Jaguar sensibilities are in place like impeccable design and a great number of trim levels, so every buyer can find the exact XJ-Series model that fits his or her taste. However, with a base price of $65,700, the buyer pool is significantly lessened.

Inside, the 2009 Jaguar XJ includes Burl walnut accents, a wood and leather trimmed steering wheel, premium sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an optional multimedia entertainment system. This entertainment system features two 6.5-inch LCD screens built into the headrests and a DVD player. Bluetooth technology is included in every XJ trim level which allows drivers to make hands free calls while driving. A DVD-based navigation unit is available in the higher trim levels, and reverse park control is standard on all trims. This feature provides drivers with sound alerts when parallel parking, warning them when the 2009 XJ is too close to another vehicle. Power seats, mirrors, moonroof, and windows are all standard as well.

Under the hood, the Jaguar XJ-Series is fitted with either a 300 horsepower 4.2L V8 or an impressive 400 horsepower 4.2L Supercharged V8. All trims are equipped with a six-speed electronic automatic transmission. Ant-lock brakes, an electronic parking brake, and dynamic stability control are all standard also. Performance-tuned suspension is included in the XJR edition.

A wealth of safety features are standard on the Jaguar XJ like energy-absorbent seating, a tire pressure monitoring system, and complete airbag protection for all five passengers. The energy-absorbent seating actually embraces passengers in the event of a collision, rather than propel them forward like other maker's seating. Though the XJ is equipped with a computerized chip key system, some buyers might be turned off by the expensive replacement and duplicate cost. However, each computerized chip is uniquely created for a specific 2009 XJ-Series model, so the risk of a break-in is significantly decreased.

Overall, the 2009 Jaguar XJ-Series is an elegant, powerful luxury sedan that includes standard features not seen in most other models on the American market. But, with 16 city MPG and 25 highway MPG, the XJ falls flat. Buyers looking for exceptional fuel economy will end up looking elsewhere. Nevertheless, for consumers seeking a highly customizable model that provides both status and safety, the Jaguar XJ-Series is a great match.
