When compared to the similarly equipped Jeep Compass, the Jeep Patriot feels more like most would consider an authentic Jeep, as the Patriot lacks many of the more refined road manners and feature filled cabins of other vehicles, including the Compass, in the 5 passenger compact SUV class. Similar to the previous versions of the Jeep Cherokee, the appearance is suggestive of a more full featured and comfortable 4 door Jeep, but is designed to be tougher and more capable to handle off road excursions. The 2008 Jeep Patriot model has only received minor upgrades that include some interior chrome accents and an optional navigation system.
The 2008 Jeep Patriot comes in the base model Sport and upscale Limited Edition trims. The Sport is pretty basic, with the standard configuration including 16 inch steel rims, air conditioning, cruise control and an AM/FMCD/MP3 player with an auxiliary audio jack. The more luxury oriented Limited trim has 17 inch aluminum wheels and an assortment of desirable power features.
Both the Jeep Sport and Limited trims can be equipped with a moonroof, a premium audio system with flip down speakers integrated into the liftgate. 4 wheel drive versions can opt for skid plates, high torque gearing, higher clearance, and down hill control.
Power is provided by a 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder engine that produces 172 horsepower that is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission, with a continuously variable transmission as an option. All models can be configured with front wheel drive or all wheel drive. A less powerful and costly 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine is also available for the Sport edition. EPA estimates for the all wheel drive versions with the continuously variable transmission are 21 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
Although for the most part outclassed for its category by other 5 passenger SUV's, the 2008 Jeep Patriot is an adequate in terms of performance and delivers impressive off road capabilities at an affordable price.
