Jeep brings back its popular midsize SUV with the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This year's model continues the tradition of delivering both luxury and durability. Of course, the performance capabilities will depend on which of the three trim options you choose. The Grand Cherokee has a starting price tag of around $30,000. The Cherokee is available in the Laredo, Limited, and Overland models. The options continue with four different power plants to choose from.
On the outside, the 2009 Cherokee hasn't changed much. It continues to draw from its classic Jeep roots with its seven slotted grill and sharp edges. The 2009 Grand Cherokee dimensions are 186.7" long by 72.6" wide, which is a bit smaller than the other vehicles in its class, such as the Explorer and Trailblazer. The Laredo and Limited come with 17" chrome wheels while the Overland jumps to 18".
There are, however, noticeable changes once you climb inside the 2009 Cherokee. New for this year is the leather that has been added to the armrests, doors and the top of the instrument panel. The 108.9 cubic feet of passenger space is adequate, especially when compared to the 103.1 cubic feet of the 4Runner. However, the Grand Cherokee continues to lag behind its competitors in the area of cargo space. The 67.4 cubic feet is less than both the Toyota 4Runner and the Ford Explorer. Standard in all trim options are air conditioning, power locks, windows, and mirrors, as well as an eight-way power driver's seat. Options include TV, hands-free communication, remote start, voice activated navigation and audio system, and 30GB hard drive.
All trim options come with a standard five speed automatic transmission. There are, however, plenty of options where the engine is concerned. First is the 210 horsepower, 3.7 liter V6. There's also a 215 horsepower, turbodiesel 3.0 liter V6 that offers a little better fuel mileage. If you're looking for something a little beefier, there are also a 305 horsepower, 4.7 liter V8, and a redesigned 357 horsepower, 5.7 liter HEMI V8. This option has the ability to deactivate four cylinders when you do not need them. This will improve your gas mileage on long trips. You can generally expect around 13/20 miles per gallon. Options include rear and four wheel drive, as well as Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist.
Jeep also had safety in mind for the 2009 Jeep Cherokee. Standard features include side and front airbags, antilock brakes, and stability and traction control. Options for additional safety features include parking assist, rear back up camera, and automatic wipers and headlights.
The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee can accommodate the family on a road trip, or a weekend climb into the mountains and, its price is reasonably comparable with that of its competitors.
