The 2009 Jeep Patriot delivers impressive off-road capabilities and even more impressive fuel economy ratings. It is rated at 25/29 mpg city/highway and features a more than adequately-powerful 2.4L V4 engine coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission. Its appearance shows hints of both the Liberty and the newly-designed Compass. Some even say it looks like a scaled-down Commander.
The Jeep Patriot is shorter than the Honda CR-V by 4 inches, but still offers over an inch of extra legroom in the rear measuring 38.4 inches. Cargo space is more than ample and with the optional flat-fold front passenger seat, you can fit an 8-foot kayak completely inside the vehicle. People love that fact that sticker shock is minimized with MSRPs starting at only $14,985. 4WD versions cost a few thousand extra, but still present excellent value.
Some of the standard features on the Patriot by Jeep for 2009 include 16-inch steel wheels with all-season tires; a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD/mp3 stereo system; rear windshield wiper; halogen headlights; roof rails and vinyl seating. Stock safety features include ABS braking, plenty of airbags, electronic traction/stability control and anti-rollover mitigation systems.
The standard manual transmission can be optionally fitted with the Continual Variable Transaxle mechanism, but some say that it feels quite strange. Mated to the 2.4L 172hp engine, it torques out an impressive 165 lb-ft and can accelerate in the middle of an upslope going 75 mph. Power is no problem for the Patriot. When the CVT is opted for, the Hill Descent Control system is automatically engaged while in low range on steep hills. This locks the Patriot in at 5 mph and in smooth control. No need for any feet on the pedals - it takes care of it all. A smooth, steady ride is granted by independent suspension in any number of difficult terrain scenarios.
The Patriot comes in four trim levels: the FWD or 4WD Sport and the FWD or 4WD Limited. All trims are 4-door designs and measure 173.6 x 60.1 x 64.4 inches. Turning radii are 17.8 feet for all trims. Each cabin is spacious and comfortable. It should be noted that all trims are only rated for 1000 pounds of towing capacity, so this isn't the vehicle to choose if you do a lot of pulling. Payload ratings are 925 pounds for all trims.
The Jeep Patriot is considered a compact vehicle, sharing a platform with the Dodge Caliber. However, you won't be able to tell it. Interior space is maximized by innovative exterior design standards. It features squared corners and a vertical windshield, giving it a rougher, tougher look than the new Jeep Compass. Overall, the 2009 Jeep Patriot is an excellent value for a solid performance. It will dependably take you and yours through the rough times, and look good doing it. Fuel efficiency is a big sell point for the Patriot and owners are bragging nonstop.
