The Jeep Patriot made its international debut as a small sports utility vehicle in 2007. Daimler manufactured the vehicle and it was first seen at the New York Auto Show in April 2006. The Patriot was built on the Mitsubishi GS body that it shared with the Jeep Compass. It is a four door vehicle that derives its power from a 2.4 Liter gas engine, and comes with either four wheel or front wheel drive. The Patriot comes in two versions - entry level and limited. All Patriots come with curtain airbags on the side and a stability system that is electronically controlled. The Vehicle seats five passengers in two rows of seats. The entry level model has seats made of Vinyl Tech and has manual doors and locks. Optional on this model are power locks and windows and seats made of expensive cloth. In the Limited version the seat beside the driver can be folded flat, the seat in the back is split and it has a sunroof. If one buys the Limited with the Leather Interior Package, they get leather seats that are heated in the front.
In 2008, there have been no major changes to the Jeep Patriot. The Patriot derives a lot of its looks from the traditional Jeep. In this year one can get an all-wheel drive model that can be used to drive in rough terrain. The gear ratio is intended to provide high torque and it has a system that can control the speed of the vehicle when it's coming down a hill. Added safety features include a system that prevents the vehicle from skidding and front airbags.
2011 Jeep PatriotThe 2011 Jeep Patriot is one of those well-built, affordable SUVs with fine off-road performance that, through no fault of its own, is simply surpassed by highly popular crossovers that deliver a silky smooth ride. The Patriot opens at $15,995 and sells on the high end for $23,895. It delivers 23 mpg around town, and 29 on the highway. The Patriot's main rivals are the Kia Sportage, which has more standard features and a slightly better interior for only $500 more; and the Subaru Forester, which has standard all-wheel drive for $2,000 more.
The standard engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 hp. (There's an available 2.0-liter on 2WD models with 158 hp.) The standard transmission is a five-speed manual, which reviewers prefer over the optional continuously variable transmission. Reviewers don't find any of the engine / transmission combinations to be particularly peppy, but all are competent and for Jeep devotees, comfortable and solid. Front-wheel drive is the standard choice, but the Freedom Drive 1 and Freedom Drive II Off-Road Group put 4WD on the table.

2008 Jeep PatriotWhen compared to the similarly equipped Jeep Compass, the Jeep Patriot feels more like most would consider an authentic Jeep, as the Patriot lacks many of the more refined road manners and feature filled cabins of other vehicles, including the Compass, in the 5 passenger compact SUV class.
