2009 Kia Spectra Review

The 2009 Kia Spectra is a carryover model from the previous year. This four-door sedan is available in three different trim levels, and front active headrests have become standard for the 2009 model year. Potential buyers might be disappointed with only one engine option, but the 100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty could be enough to win over even the most discriminating consumer. Also, with a base MSRP of $13,200, it will be difficult for shoppers to find a more affordable sedan on the American auto market, despite the encouraging reviews for the Chevrolet Aveo.

Under the hood, the 2009 Spectra is fitted with a 138 horsepower 2.0L DOHC I4 with Continuously Variable Valve Timing. This feature allows the engine to gauge the necessary duration for exhaust valve intake, which can ultimately save fuel. Standard in the Spectra is a five-speed manual transmission, but buyers can upgrade to an electronically-controlled four-speed automatic with overdrive.

Inside, the Kia Spectra features a single CD player with four speakers, but buyers can opt for a premium sound system with a six-disc CD changer and MP3 compatibility on the SX trim. Tilt steering, dual twelve-volt power outlets, and a 60/40 split folding rear seat are standard on all trims. Optional upgrades include metal brake and acceleration pedals and floor mats on the LX trim. While the Spectra is an inexpensive model, some features generally considered standard on other models are considered upgrades on the Spectra like air conditioning on the LX. However, several accessories are available for the 2009 Spectra. A trunk net, cargo tray, and hood protector can be purchased for any of the trim levels. A remote start system with a security feature can be added as well.

The Spectra's three trim levels vary mostly in exterior features. The base LX trim includes 15-inch steel wheels, clear lens halogen headlamps, and body color exterior accents. For a few thousand dollars more buyers can have the SX trim with a rear spoiler, tinted windows, fog lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, and sport-tuned suspension. This type of suspension provides a smoother ride and enhanced handling.

Overall, the 2009 Kia Spectra is an intro sedan that does not have any remarkable included upgrades. Nevertheless, for the price, the Spectra is a solid model that has a notable warranty. Not only that, the NHTSA gave the 2009 Spectra a five-star frontal crash test rating, while Cars.com named this Kia "Best Bang for the Buck." Also, Kia did not hold back on safety features for the Spectra with a list that includes a tire pressure monitoring system, airbag protection for all five passengers, and available anti-lock brakes. With 23 city MPG and 30 highway MPG, the Spectra has better fuel efficiency than most of the competition as well.
