The 2009 Lexus IS 250 and 350 models are continuing to drive other automakers to the brink of insanity as they try to figure out how Lexus keeps upping its own standards. Lexus has been and continues to be the world's leader in innovative automotive design and manufacturing. The IS Series is one of two Lexus entry-level vehicles - like the Infiniti M, most automakers have only one. This 2X approach has allowed Lexus to produce at least one car that is a perfect fit for anyone and everyone.
The IS 350 pushes out 306 horses from its V6 superstar engine to compliment the tight styling and sporty interior space. It is probably the classiest sports-sedan on the planet. Smooth, exciting acceleration is a given. The only downer of note is that there is but one transmission available - a 6-speed automatic that shifts too slowly. While handling is quite responsive, many feel that the steering is a bit lacking in the communications department.
The interior materials are unsurpassed in quality. The bold exterior styling is eye-catching to say the least and the suspension system is supple and refined. When you're seated inside the IS, you will find it to be remarkably quiet. Exterior noises are not heard easily to say the least. The IS 350 is available in one trim only. Stock features include 17-inch wheels, all leather seats, dual zoned climate control, and a superior audio system with a 6-disc CD changer and auxiliary jack.
Optional features are plentiful and include everything that you can wish for. This is Lexus and they're not going to have very many oversights. Heated/ventilated front seating; rain sensing wipers; 18-inch wheels; Mark Levinson surround sound stereos; XM Radio; BlueTooth, NAV systems - you name, it is available.
The 2009 IS is rear wheel driven and grants you readily-tenacious acceleration. Zero to sixty times are measured at a mere 5.6 seconds. Fuel economy ratings are at 18/25 mpg city/highway (20 mpg when combined). Of course Lexus has you well covered in the safety department offering standard safety features including ABS braking, electronic traction and stability control systems, full-length side curtain bags and dual staged front airbags.
There is also an optional pre-collision system (PCS) that detects when a collision is eminent. Computerized sensors automatically stiffen the suspension; tighten front seat belts and implement a braking assistance mechanism for controlled stopping power. Of course, the Lexus IS earned a perfect 5-star rating for the NHTSA for frontal and side crash tests.
In summary, the 2009 Lexus IS is a thrilling and stylish vehicle that provides excellent value at the MSRP of $36,605 and up. It features a powerful and responsive engine that is just a bit degraded by its slow-shifting auto tranny. Steering is likewise just a bit off, but overall, the IS-Series from Lexus are remarkable vehicles. Interior design is amazing and exterior styling is definitely attention-grabbing. You owe it to yourself to test drive a new Lexus IS today.
