The Lexus IS first became available to the general public at the turn of the millennium, in 2000. Lexus manufactured the IS series to compete with the BMW 3-series. The results were somewhat disappointing for Lexus, as the BMW 3-series has 80% higher sales that the Lexus IS series. The following year after the premier production year, Lexus came out with a 5-speed manual transmission on the IS. This model turned out to be an exceptional racing car, taking first place at a race at the Virginia International Speedway.
Lexus was one of the first car manufacturers to provided thumb-shift buttons, located on the steering wheel, for clutch-less shifts on automatic models. Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control are included on recent models of the IS. VHS and TC provide exceptional grip and handling, when making sharp turns. The Lexus IS has always been a remarkably silent car, even at high speeds. The 0.29 coefficient of drag proves the silent ride provided by the Lexus IS. Depending on the model, the Lexus IS can go from 0 60 MPH between 5.6 and 8.3 seconds and has a top speed of 144 MPH, so a low coefficient of drag is crucial.
While the Lexus IS may not stand up to some of its competitors, its proven itself to be a fun, reliable and efficient sports car to drive. With over a decade of experience making this model, we can only hope that more improvements lay ahead for the Lexus IS.
