The Lincoln MKX is a crossover SUV that was put on the market in December of 2006. At that point, it was known as the MY 2007. The name for this model is different from previous ones used for Lincoln models in that is was the first one to use a letter-and-number combination, as opposed to a word name. The MKX is a similar vehicle to the Ford Edge, although it has been modified slightly. The MKX is constructed in a unibody manner, as opposed to a body-on-frame model like the Lincoln Aviator was. The MKX is manufactured at Ford's Oakville Assembly plant in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. It is the first Lincoln vehicle built in that country since 1936.

The name "MLX" was chosen for the vehicle shortly before the North American International Auto Show held in 2006. At that point, MKX was being pronounced "Mark-X" but the name didn't catch on with the public or with dealers. In fact, some retailers refused to refer to the SUV by that name during training sessions for sales representatives offered by the Company. Ford did use this pronunciation ("Mark Ex") in the first half of 2006, but in July of that year started referring to it as the "Em-Kay-Ex").

As a result of the change, the Company was named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by Honda. The reason for the action started in January 2006 was that "MKX" was too close to the name of the Acura MDX offered by the Japanese car maker. The matter never made it to trial and was settled out of court.

The internal code name for the MKX was the U388. This vehicle came equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine, which is capable of producing 265 hp. The Lincoln MKZ and the Ford Edge also use the same type of engine. The MKX is outfitted with an automatic transmission (six speed) that was developed in partnership with General Motors. The vehicle gets 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

The MKX was updated for the 2008 model year. It now shows Lincoln badges near the front doors. Customers can choose to have heated rear seats and/or a Vista Roof as an option on the MKX. This vehicle has been referred to as "one of the luxurious crossovers on the market." This luxury comes at a price. If you would like to own a Lincoln MKX, you will be looking at spending at least $35,000 for the privilege.
