Lincoln Navigator

Since the beginning, the Lincoln Navigator has had a large fan base. From music videos to feature films to popular television shows, the Navigator has taken on a celebrity status. Movies that have highlighted the model range from Swordfish to Romeo Must Die to Hustle, films that displayed the lifestyle that the Navigator represents. Television shows like The Shield, The Sopranos, and V.I.P. furthered the idea that the Navigator is a full-size SUV for those looking for a high profile. The model was even animated in both Comedy Central's popular South Park and the cartoon The Boondocks. With so much press, it is a bit shocking that the model's sales have been on the decline. However, Lincoln has no plans to discontinue the model and is even scheduling updates for the 2010 model year.

First released in 1998, the Navigator was essentially a luxury edition of the Ford Expedition. With a 5.4L V8 engine, the Navigator was one of the most powerful full-size SUVs on the market at the time. The four-door model was not updated until the second generation in 2003. New features included a 5.4L Triton SOHC V8, a more refined exterior, and an AG-sourced six-speed automatic transmission. The second generation also truly put the Navigator on the map as a luxury vehicle with a number of entertainment accessories like a rear seat DVD player, navigation unit, advanced audio system, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

In 2007, the Navigator received another makeover. The exterior morphed into a bulkier, more imposing build and several interior upgrades were added as well (premium sound system, sophisticated navigation unit, etc.). Though the Navigator has been criticized by environmentally friendly groups, Lincoln has not released any information regarding the possibility of a hybrid or alternative fuel version.

There are rumors floating around that several celebrities will be designing versions of the Lincoln Navigator for mass market production. Nevertheless, Lincoln has yet to confirm or deny the gossip. Names that have been mentioned include soccer star David Beckham and rap moguls P. Diddy and Jay Z. Other reports state that Lincoln intends to equip all new models after the 2009 model year with top-of-the-line gaming systems and a collection of games (some of which feature an animated Navigator). Even more talk says that the Lincoln Navigator will soon be equipped with Mac computer compatibilities. Evidently, the stereo system, navigation unit, and other features will be able to be controlled by the laptop. Lincoln has yet to confirm.

One of the most popular features presented by the 2010 Navigator is the powered liftgate, a feature the Chevrolet Tahoe had, but lost. You simply push a button on the inside of the cab, or on your key fob, and in your liftgate automatically opens and closes. Loading luggage, groceries and more becomes a simplistic procedure that used to be cumbersome.
