2009 Mazda Tribute Review

The 2009 Mazda Tribute is a direct carryover from the 2008 model which was redesigned on both the exterior and interior to accommodate more comfort and enhanced safety. Only the engines and chassis remained the same - and even they got some tweaks. The Tribute is fitted with a Ford Duratec 3.0L 200hp V6 and a 4-speed auto transmission that generates 193 lb-ft of torque. This engine has a fuel efficiency rating of 18/24 mpg city/highway and produces a smooth and responsive ride. Also, on Tribute i models, the engine is a Ford/Mazda 2.3L 153hp 4-cylinder that generates 153 lb-ft of torque and 22/28 mpg (19/24 on AWD models).

The 2008 interior redesign focused of convenience and comfort while maintaining the $20,000 price point. MSRPs for the 2009 Tribute begin at $19,730 and climb to $27,635 for a fully-loaded version. Notably, the dual-staged AC system is freezing cold and all controls are easily reached by the driver - everything is positioned very thoughtfully. The controls are also very straightforward to operate, leaving the driver free to concentrate on the core function of safe driving.

The redesigned suspension system produces a superior ride - smooth and responsive. Bumps are filtered with excellence and corners are handled with low-leaning ease. Wide-tracked 4-wheel independent suspension is the key here along with MacPherson front struts and a multi-linked rear. Solid and predictable handling is another mark of the Mazda Tribute. The electric-powered rack and pinion steering system seems almost laser-guided and makes for easy parallel parks as well. Speaking of that, parking in general is made easier by the newly squared front fenders - you can see what you need to without any neck stretching.

The rear brakes are now drums and this may present a slight issue for those who do a lot of towing. Electronic stability and traction control, rollover control, tire monitors, 2-staged frontal airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and rear child safety locks (LATCH) are all standard safety features. NHTSA crash test ratings are 5 stars for both front/rear side impacts, 5 stars for passenger frontals and 3 stars for drivers frontals.

The new design is far cleaner looking than the previous generation was, and distinguished itself from the Ford Escape to an even greater degree. A tighter, more refined finish is presented. The now black egg crate-styled grille has been toned down which helps a lot in itself. The conservative overall appearance commands respect and at the same time, one gets the feeling (and rightfully so) that these Mazdas can handle themselves in off-road scenarios. Trapezoidal halogen headlamps are small, but powerful while the 7-spoke alloy wheels are neither impressive nor distracting.

rear bumper has been designed flat to accommodate easier climbs to the roof rack. The rack itself is easily adjustable with fingertip knobs. Features like these are a big part of what makes the Tribute one of the most thoughtful SUVs available. Overall, the 2009 Mazda Tribute offers impressive value, loads of comfort and dependable performance. Sales are strong and the future is looking very solid for these small SUVs.
