The 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a 7-passenger full-size luxury SUV that competes with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade-but is offered at a much more reasonable price. The V8 engines provide strong acceleration, while the V6 turbo diesel offers around 20 mpg. All models feature extremely comfortable seats, an elegantly designed and quiet interior and, of course this SUV is representative of the infamous Mercedes-Benz quality and performance. New for the 2008 model year is the addition of the GL550, which features a larger 382 horsepower V8 engine and more robust grille, 21 inch wheels and fender flares.

The GL450, GL350 CDI and the GL550 represent the various trims available for the GL-Class. The GL450 and GL320 CDI are identically equipped, with the exception of their powertrains. Both models come standard with 18-inch wheels, refined cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and power operated front seats, a split folding and power operated third row seat, and the Mercedes COMAND electronic interface, which includes an 8 speaker audio system with glove box mounted six-CD changer and auxiliary audio input.

The GL550 includes all of the above standard equipment and replaces the rims with 21 inch wheels and adds some unique exterior styling details. Stand-alone options on the GL450 and GL320 CDI include adaptive cruise control and keyless ignition, while all GL-Class models can be equipped with a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and an iPod integration kit. An Enhanced Off-Road Package is available only for the GL450.

All GL's come with a 7-speed automatic transmission and all wheel drive. The GL450 features a 4.7 liter V8 engine that delivers 335 horsepower. With the addition of the Off Road Package, the GL450 gains underbody skid plates, a two speed transfer case with low range gearing, as well as locking center and rear differentials. The GL320 CDI is powered by a 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 engine. As is typical of all diesel engines horsepower is low and torque is high, with the GL320 CDI producing 215 horsepower and 398 lb of torque. With its diesel engine, the GL320 CDI provides impressive full-size SUV gas mileage, with EPA estimates coming in at 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg. However, the GL320 CDI is not available anywhere that has adopted California's strict emissions standards. The GL550 propels forth with the help of a potent, 382 horsepower, 5.5 liter V8 engine.

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class tends to be more refined than other vehicles in its class, and costs much less than might be expected. The GL-Class also tends to lack some of the flash and oversized frames associated with other full size SUV's, yet its excellent craftsmanship and plush interior combined with its excellent cargo and passenger space make this SUV very appealing to discerning and more rational minded SUV shoppers.
