2009 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Review

Minimally revamped for this model year, the 2009 Mercedes Benz CLS-Class is a four-door luxury sedan. It is available in two different trim levels, the base CLS550 and the high performance CLS63. A stronger chassis for the CLS63 AMG and a standard navigation unit and Bluetooth on the CLS550 are the only substantial changes for 2009. With impressive power and a sleek, European-inspired exterior, the CLS-Class is sure to make an impact on buyers. However, the steep price will rule out a great majority of consumers. Not only that, poor fuel efficiency could also be the downfall of the 2009 CLS-Class.

Inside, the Mercedes Benz CLS-Class is stocked with luxury features. Four-zone climate control, rich laurel wood trim, leather seating, and 4GB of music storage built into the audio system are all included in the base trim. A hard-drive-based in-dash navigation unit is top of the line. This system does not require the outdated DVD program. Instead, it stores up to 40GB and utilizes a Global Positioning System that projects a signal to a satellite to determine the vehicle's exact location. Not only is this type of system more reliable than a static DVD, it is much more accurate.

Under the hood, the CLS550 is equipped with a 382 horsepower 5.5L V8 and can reach 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds. The CLS63 features an even more powerful 507 horsepower 6.2L V8 that produces an immense 738-lbs per foot of torque. Both trims include a seven-speed automatic transmission as well.

Though the CLS-Class's power sounds more like a cramped sports car, this sedan comfortably seats four passengers. Also, a Premium Package can be added that includes heated and ventilated seats, an MP3 player interface, headlamp washing system, and electronic trunk closer. The MP3 player interface allows drivers to sync their iPod (or other brand MP3 player) with the audio system, which will not only let drivers listen to saved music; it will also display any data or images saved on the player.

With 14 city MPG and 21 highway MPG, the 2009 Mercedes Benz CLS-Class lacks the level of fuel efficiency expected in a contemporary model. However, most buyers willing to pay $68,950 for a sedan are not overly concerned with higher fuel costs. Nevertheless, the buyer that is looking for a family friendly sedan with impressive fuel economy should take a look at other vehicles on the market, including the Cadillac STS. The buyer that wants superior power and elegant design will find that the 2009 CLS-Class is an excellent fit.
