Mercedes-Benz M-Class

The Mercedes Benz M Class made its groundbreaking introduction in the United States in 1998. The introduction of the 1998 mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle - presented as the ML320, marked the first Mercedes Benz vehicle that was designed specifically for the American marketplace and was built entirely in the United States. Although there were several other models of M Class offered in Europe, American consumers and industry analysts were very happy with the single four door ML320. They appreciated the refined, luxurious mid-sized SUV that offered a well received and appreciated blend of SUV utility and features typically enjoyed in a Mercedes manufactured passenger car.

In 1999, the ML430 was added to the Mercedes Benz M Class lineup in America. The 4.3 liter V8 engine in the M430 made this model significantly more powerful than the ML 320 and its 3.2 liter V6 engine. Both models had superb handling and standard interior features such as a Bose sound system and heated leather seats.

Ever thirsty for more, Mercedes Benz responded to American automotive consumers in 2002 by replacing the ML430 with the all new ML500. As the alpha numeric model name suggests, this Mercedes Benz M Class model was equipped with a more potent 5.0 liter V8 engine. Although the exterior was left virtually unchanged with the exception of new side mirrors, headlights and bumpers - the interior received some nice upgrades including wood grain trim and an automatic climate control system.

The popularity of the M Class in America prompted Mercedes to invest more in their American made vehicle, and in 2003 the Mercedes Benz M Class offered an additional model - the ML350. This 3.7 liter V6 was more popular than the ML320 and subsequently replaced the ML320 for the 2004 model year. Although the competition had begun to rise to the occasion, the Mercedes Benz M Class was being compared to vehicles that delivered a smoother ride and a more rounded body style. The ML500 and the ML350 were still considered outstanding in both design and function and held up better than the competition when it came to off-road driving or inclement weather conditions.
