Mercury Grand Marquis

The Mercury Grand Marquis debuted in 1992 to the tremendous delight of many satisfied drivers that brought along equally delightful strong sales of the full size luxury sedan. This first generation of Grand Marquis remained in production until a complete redesign in 1998 and thrived during a time when solid, full size luxury sedans were appreciated and were often seen as a favorable status symbol. This new aerodynamically designed sedan was powered by a 4.6 liter V8 engine and easily transported six adults and a large amount of cargo. The exterior was classy looking, but conservatively so, as was the interior. With the manufacturer's reputation for producing well engineered, reliable, safe and comfortable cars, the Grand Marquis with its room for six and lots of luggage quickly became a favorite fleet car.

Even as the popularity of large luxury sedans was fading fast and SUVs and minivans were flooding the market, the 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis was still capturing the attention of drivers and industry analysts that could still truly appreciate the size, power, luxury and value of this full size sedan. The years to follow would find this large sedan driving down many a highway in Florida, where seniors tend to flock, being appreciated for its smooth ride and exceptional handling as a result of its new frame, new shocks and independent front suspension system. The front and rear received modest and stylish updates as well as brighter headlights. The interior received several comfort and convenience upgrades including new cup holders, new door trim, and more comfortable and plush seating. Crash test ratings were amongst the best, in part due to the safety features that included optional side impact airbags and revised frame crossmembers that serve to protect passengers in the event of a side impact crash.

In 2004, drivers who still longed for reasonably a priced roomy sedan and a smooth ride saw Grand Marquis updates in terms of new options-such as heated front seats and a moon roof-and laminated side window glad which reduced road and wind noise. The changes for 2005 were minor, with cosmetic upgrades being the only differences from the 2004 model. The previously anything but sporty sedan saw some modest athletically inspired updates to the exterior, trim packages and options including newly designed headlamps, new front fascia and 16 inch, 16 spoke alloy wheels and an overhead console with garage door opener.

The 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis is still one of the few new large luxury sedans with rear wheel drive available today. Reminiscent of another era in many ways, the Marquis does sufficiently integrate modern technology and engineering. The two available models are the GS and the LS, with the LS being equipped with additional features such as a moon roof, heated leather seats, leather wrapped steering wheel and Homelink wireless control system that can be programmed to operate radio frequency devices such as electronic gates, automatic garage doors and home or office lighting. The price of gas not withstanding, the Grand Marquis is still a great value for those who want a large, responsive, luxury sedan at a relatively affordable price.
