The 2008 Nissan Sentra sedan (four door, five passengers) lists in an MSRP range of $15,750 to $20,180 and is available in five trim levels. The base, S, and SL are equipped with a 2-liter I4 producing 140 horsepower and return approximately 25 miles per gallon in town and 33 on the highway. The SE-R and SE-R Spec-V have a 200 hp, 2.5-liter I4 under the hood and get 24/30 and 21/29 mpg respectively. (All models have an option for either an automatic or manual transmission.)
The 2008 Sentra returns for the coming model year largely unchanged from 2007. Its greatest selling points are a reputation for efficiency and affordability in a package that delivers satisfying comfort. Stylistically the Sentra doesn't set the world on fire. It's pretty much a typical, compact sedan. Some reviewers have gone so far as to call the Sentra "sporty," but that's a bit of a stretch until you move up to the SE-R. Expect a little more engine noise than on pricier vehicles and just a little less "oompf" from the accelerator. The Sentra isn't exactly sluggish, but there are other cars with more immediate get up and go.
The Sentra returns a good level of safety features with advanced air bag placement in the side and curtain positions as well as active restraint and the LATCH system for child safety seats. In a collision, occupants are protected by the vehicle's Zone Body construction and crumple zones both front and rear. The steering column is energy absorbing and the hood has buckle creases. Add guard beams in the side doors and a system for tire pressure monitoring and the Sentra stacks up nicely against competing sedans for protection features.
There are a wide range of choices up and down the trim levels, but in the base model look for a pass through to the trunk, power windows and doors, variable wipers, and suede cloth seats standard. Options include such amenities as leather seating, keyless entry, hands free phone via BlueTooth, and a trip computer. Overall the Sentra is a high value, high performance sedan that can be outfitted with a sufficient level of options to satisfy most any driver. This one is a solid buy in a good price range and should hold up well.
