2009 Nissan Cube Review
The newest Nissan to be added to the lineup, the 2009 Nissan Cube, provides fresh competition for the subcompact class. It is a 4-door hatchback that is available in four trim levels. The base model is called the Cube 1.8. There is also a 1.8S and a 1.8 SL, the middle and upper level trims. The fourth trim level is North American-exclusive and called the Krom. It is the top of the line for Cubes. All trims feature a 1.8L 122hp inline 4-cylinder engine that has been borrowed from the Nissan Versa. 2 transmission choices are offered: a 6-speed automatic and a continuously variable model.
Standard safety features include ABS braking, electronic traction control and an anti-skid system in addition to front, front side and side curtain airbags. The rear seating is positioned at an elevated level compared to other subcompacts and is able to be moved forwards and backwards to make room for either passengers or additional cargo.
Competition for the 2009 Cube from Nissan is offered from the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, Suzuki SX4 and the Scion xD in addition to the Chevrolet Aveo, Toyota Yaris and the Pontiac G3. This is obviously a highly competitive market due to the fuel efficient nature of all subcompacts. 2009 is the first year that the Cube has been offered in the US - falling in line with its complete redesign for the model year. Base model MSRPs start at $13,990. S trims start at $14,690, SL trims at $16,790 and the fanciest Krom trims start at $19,370.
As per its name, the Nissan Cube is boxy in appearance. In fact, Nissan calls the economy car a "Bulldog in sunglasses". Compared to other Cube versions, this new 2009 design is actually less boxy, yet maintains it asymmetrical D-pillar design. This is advantageous to drivers in terms of enhanced visibility.
Personalization accessories for the Nissan Cube for 2009 number more than 40. The company's website offers a "Reserve Your Cube" feature that allows shoppers to custom order every detail about their new Cube and have it delivered to their local dealer having never spoken to a salesperson.
There are reports of a hybrid version Cube in development as well as an all-electric model to be offered by the 2012 model year. Nissan anticipates very solid sales levels and the beginning of a long-running North American audience. Curb weight for the 2009 Cube is 2762 pounds and overall dimensions are 156.7 x 66.7 x 65 inches length, width and height respective. The wheelbase measures 99.6 inches.
The 2009 Nissan Cube promises to create havoc for autos like the Yaris and the Scion xD. All projections are very favorable and it looks as though Nissan has another hit on their hands. Explore the quick, quirky, fun and efficient Cube more today. You just might fall for this bulldog in sunglasses.
