The Pontiac G8 is a 4-door sports sedan whose base trim is powered by an aluminum 3.6L 256 horsepower V6 engine. With the engine weight lessened by the aluminum, the vehicle is able to both reach higher speeds faster and get better gas mileage. The GT trim has an aluminum 6.0L V8 SFI engine that produces 361 horsepower. Though that large of an engine can certainly have an impact on fuel economy, the G8 GT is fitted with Active Fuel Management to turn off cylinders while not in use. Both the Sedan and GT are available with either a 5-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control and Sport Mode or a 6-speed automatic with the same features. The automatic would be perfect for those drivers not consumed with pretending to be a racecar driver. Those that feel the need for speed seeping from their pores would do better with the manual transmission. The G8 Sedan can get 17 city MPG and 25 highway MPG, while the GT can reach 15 city and 24 highway. Neither of these are terribly impressive numbers; obviously, Pontiac has yet to reconcile power and performance with fuel economy.
Inside, the 2009 G8 has plenty to be proud of, including a 100,000 mile warranty not available in the Toyota Avalon. A superior sound system with an MP3 player outlet is standard in the Sedan trim. The GT gets an even better sound system with a 6-disc in-dash CD changer, 6.5-inch illuminated screen, and stereo theft protection. Power door locks and windows are standard. Child safety locks and full-coverage airbags are standard as well; however, the convenience of remote keyless start and a one-year subscription to OnStar round out the top features.
The 2009 Pontiac G8 is perfect for the father that wants to drive a vehicle that is both family-friendly and tough at the same time. The G8 Sedan is listed for $27,595, while the GT trim is around $29,995. For a mid-size sports sedan, the prices might be a bit too steep for buyers. However, the interior features and engine modifications could be a huge selling point. Also, the lower estimated MPG is enough to make anyone turn away.
