2009 Pontiac Torrent Review

The 2009 Pontiac Torrent brings a touch of style and generous power to the crossover category. This four-door model features four trim levels that allow buyers to truly tailor the Torrent to meet their needs. With the highest crash test rating, the Pontiac Torrent is among the best in its class for safety, and the gratis one-year subscription to OnStar gives the five-passenger model a leg up on the Kia Sportage and its other competition. Though the Torrent is noticeably based on a traditional SUV exterior, there is a distinct modern twist with sharp lines and an aggressive front end style.

Inside, the 2009 Torrent is stocked with a wealth of accessories. Some available features include heated front seats and a premium sound system. This Pontiac can be individualized with a number of added packages. The Preferred Package brings a remote starter system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The mirror will instinctively dim when the intensity of a vehicle's headlights disrupt the rear viewing clarity. This allows drivers to always have an undisturbed view of the road behind them. A DVD Entertainment Package is available as well that includes a quality audio system with MP3 compatibility, a security system, and a DVD player with an LCD screen.

Under the hood, the Pontiac Torrent can be fitted with either a 185 horsepower 3.4L V6 that produces up to 210-lbs per foot of torque or a 260 horsepower 3.6L V6 that has 250-lbs per foot of torque. Both engines are gas-powered, so the buyer looking for flex fuel capabilities or a hybrid system will need to look elsewhere. Not only that, but with 17 city MPG and 24 highway MPG, many buyers will be drawn to more fuel efficient models. While a five-speed automatic transmission comes standard in the Torrent, consumers can upgrade to a six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

With a five-star frontal and side-impact crash test rating, this 2009 Pontiac is leading the way for safety. Equipped with traction control, complete airbag protection, and daytime running lights, the Torrent is a great pick for families with or without children. Also, the OnStar program includes roadside assistance, instant accident alerts, and even can be upgraded with turn-by-turn navigation. However, some buyers might be off-put that the navigation is provided by a live OnStar representative.

Overall, the 2009 Pontiac Torrent is a good pick for the family on a budget. Base priced at around $24,045, most buyers will find the cost refreshing among many of the pricey comparables. Nevertheless, the lack of contemporary fuel options puts the Torrent close to last place in the eco-friendly race.
