The 2009 Saturn Aura Hybrid is a carryover from the prior model year that features a hybrid motor generator, impressive fuel efficiency, and a sleek, elegant exterior. Though the model is priced affordably, some buyers might opt for a hybrid sedan with even better fuel economy. Nevertheless, the Aura Hybrid certainly is leading the way in appearance. Its exterior is contemporary without being too futuristic.
While the Saturn Aura Hybrid does not feature a complete two-mode hybrid system, it includes a regular 164 horsepower 2.4L I4. The hybrid technology comes in with a larger starter motor. This motor will shut down the engine when the vehicle is stopped at a light or elsewhere, but still powers the vehicle's accessories. Also, the starter motor does not require a complete restart, which would use more gasoline. Because of the lack of the two-mode system, most critics claim that the Aura is not a true hybrid; rather they are calling it a "mild hybrid." Not only that, the fuel efficiency reflects its "mild hybridness" with only 26 city MPG and 34 highway MPG. Though that is a significant increase from regular four-door sedans on the market, it does not compare to the Toyota Prius or other A-list hybrids.
The Saturn Aura features a six-speed automatic transmission with driver shift controls located on the steering wheel. This transmission allows drivers to have the convenience of an automatic with the control of a manual. A number of audio systems are available in the model, and XM Satellite Radio is included with a three-month trial subscription. XM provides hundreds of various radio channels without commercials. Automatic climate control is standard, while heated front seats, power windows, and power-adjustable front seats are optional.
One of the most appealing additions for 2009 is available through the IRS. They have officially listed the Saturn Aura Hybrid as one of the models that qualifies for a $1,300 tax credit. So, while buyers will pay $24,930 for the Aura, they will also receive a credit on their income taxes for this year. Though the 2009 Saturn Aura is not technically a full hybrid, because of its improved fuel economy, it emits fewer pollutants into the environment. So, buyers will both save money and be more environmentally friendly.
Overall, the 2009 Saturn Aura Hybrid is a pleasant mix of hybrid technology (to some extent), style, and affordability. Buyers looking to make less of an impact on the environment but not sacrifice good taste will find a great fit in the Aura. However, larger families or individuals looking for a true hybrid with exceptional fuel efficiency should look elsewhere.
